Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) Result:

Normal Range of absolute neutrophil count: 2500-6000

The absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is a measure of the number of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, in the blood.

Neutrophils are a critical component of the body’s immune system, helping to fight off infections and other diseases. Measuring the ANC is important in evaluating the immune system’s ability to fight infections.

To determine the ANC, a blood test is performed, and the number of neutrophils in a microliter of blood is counted.

This count is then multiplied by the total number of white blood cells to calculate the ANC. The normal range for ANC is typically between 1,500 and 8,000 cells per microliter of blood, although this can vary depending on the lab that performs the test.

Low absolute neutrophil count mean?

When absolute neutrophil count is less then 2500, it is known as neutropenia. It is caused by a variety of factors, including certain medications, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, bone marrow disorders, and infections such as HIV, hepatitis, or tuberculosis.

Neutropenia can increase the risk of infections, as the body may have difficulty fighting off harmful bacteria and viruses. In severe cases, neutropenia can lead to life-threatening infections and require hospitalization.

High absolute neutrophil count mean?

When absolute neutrophil count is more then 6000. This condition known as neutrophilia. It indicate an infection or inflammation in the body.

Neutrophilia can also be caused by other conditions like medications, stress, smoking, or some types of cancer.

NOTE: In some cases, a high ANC can be a sign of leukemia or other blood cancers.

What is the absolute neutrophil count (ANC) formula?

The formula for calculating absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is:

ANC = WBC x [% neutrophils + % bands]/100

WBC is the total white blood cell count, % neutrophils is the percentage of neutrophils in the white blood cell count, and % bands is the percentage of immature neutrophils called bands in the white blood cell count.

The ANC is calculated by multiplying the total white blood cell count by the sum of the percentage of neutrophils and the percentage of bands, both of which are expressed as decimals (i.e., divided by 100).
