Adenoviruses (অ্যাডিনো ভাইরাস) symptoms, treatment, preventive measures

Adenovirus is a type of virus that can cause a variety of infections in humans, ranging from the common cold to more severe respiratory illnesses.

The virus was first discovered in the 1950s and was named after the adenoid glands, which are commonly affected by the virus.

There are more than 50 types of adenoviruses, each with its unique genetic makeup, and they are classified into seven different species (A-G).

Adenoviruses are highly contagious and can be transmitted through contact with an infected person or contaminated surfaces.

What are the Symptoms of Adenoviruses

The most common symptoms of adenovirus infections include:

Gastrointestinal symptoms: Adenovirus infections can also cause gastrointestinal illnesses such as diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach cramps.
Urinary tract infections: Adenovirus infections can cause urinary tract infections, especially in young children.
Respiratory symptoms: Adenovirus infections can cause respiratory illnesses such as the common cold, bronchitis, pneumonia, and croup. These infections can cause symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, sore throat, and nasal congestion.
Eye infections: Adenovirus infections can cause conjunctivitis or pink eye, which is an inflammation of the eyes’ membranes that can cause redness, swelling, and discharge.

There is no specific treatment for adenovirus infections, and most people recover on their own without any medical intervention.

However, some treatments can alleviate symptoms and make the patient feel more comfortable. Following are these.

Rest: Adequate rest is crucial in allowing the body to recover from the infection.
Hydration: Drinking plenty of fluids can help prevent dehydration, especially in cases of gastrointestinal infections.
Pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate fever, headaches, and body aches.
Antibiotics: Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections, including adenovirus.

The best way to prevent adenovirus infections is through proper hygiene practices.

Washing hands frequently with soap and water.
Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
Covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with the virus.
Avoiding sharing personal items such as towels or utensils.
