Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is directly protein synthesis in the blood. When the protein rises in the blood due to infection, it increases the sedimentation rate of the erythrocyte.

Increasing of Erythrocyte sedimentation rate happen due to

  • Inflammation in the body
  • bacterial infection
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy
  • polymyalgia rheumatica
  • Other

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate ESR test Procedure

ESR Test requirements:

  1. A Westergren tube
  2. A Westergren stand
  3. Rubber Teat for sucking blood in the tube.

Procedure:

  1. First, dilute the blood with trisodium citrate 1 /4 ratio.
  2. Fill the Westergren tube up to zero marks, with the help of a rubber teat.
  3. Place the finger on top of the tube, so that blood remains in the column.
  4. Place the tube in Westergren’s stand. Wait for one hour.

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate range/ sed rate by modified Westergren

ESR range depends on various factors like age, gender, and infection.

  • Female: up to 12 meli meters/hour
  • Male:  10 meli meters/hour
  • Note: Newborns has usually a low value of erythrocyte sedimentation rate.
