The Group B Strep test is a routine test to check for the presence of Streptococcus agalactiae bacteria in a pregnant woman’s body.

- A health care will take two swabs—one from the lower vagina and one from the rectum.
- Both swabs are sent to a laboratory where they are cultured.
- This culture process takes about 24 to 48 hours to determine if GBS bacteria.

- If culture is positive and GBS is found, it doesn’t mean there is an infection or that the mother is unwell. It simply means agalactiae bacteria is present in her body.
- Negative Result: If there is growth on culture it means no GBS is detected, no further action is typically needed regarding GBS.
