Group B Streptococcus is common and usually harmless in adults, but it can cause serious infections in newborns during delivery.

Here’s Group b strep test procedure steps.

  • A health care will take two swabs—one from the lower vagina and one from the rectum.
  • Both swabs are sent to a laboratory where they are cultured.
  • This culture process takes about 24 to 48 hours to determine if GBS bacteria.
  • Culture observation.

  • If culture is positive and GBS is found, it doesn’t mean there is an infection or that the mother is unwell. It simply means agalactiae bacteria is present in her body.
  • Negative Result: If there is growth on culture it means no GBS is detected, no further action is typically needed regarding GBS.
