RBC Indices calculator online (HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC)

RBC indices are a group of laboratory measurements used to evaluate the size, shape, and hemoglobin content of red blood cells.

Here is rbc indices calculator.

Hematocrit (Hct) Normal Range: Men: 38.8-50.0%; Women: 34.9-44.5%

Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) normal Range: 80-100 fL

Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) normal Range: 27-33 pg

Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) normal Range: 32-36 g/dL.

These measurements can provide important information about a person’s health, including the presence of anemia or other blood disorders. RBC indices include:

  • Hematocrit (Hct): The percentage of whole blood that is made up of red blood cells.
    • It is expressed as a percentage and is determined by centrifuging a sample of blood and measuring the volume of RBCs in relation to the total volume of blood.
    • A normal hematocrit range is typically between 37-54% for adult men and 36-46% for adult women. A high hematocrit value (above normal range) may indicate conditions such as polycythemia vera, dehydration or lung diseases that prevent adequate oxygenation of the blood.
  • Hemoglobin (Hb): The protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
  • Mean corpuscular volume (MCV): The average volume of a red blood cells. It is typically measured in femtoliters (fL) and is calculated by dividing the hematocrit (the percentage of RBCs in a blood sample) by the RBC count.
    • A normal MCV value is typically between 80 and 100 fL.
    • An elevated MCV value, known as macrocytosis, may indicate conditions such as vitamin B12 deficiency or folate deficiency anemia, liver disease, or heavy alcohol use.
    • A low MCV value, known as microcytosis, may indicate conditions such as iron deficiency anemia,
  • Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH): The average amount of hemoglobin in a red blood cell.
  • Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC): The average concentration of hemoglobin in a red blood cell.
  • Red cell distribution width (RDW): The variation in the size of red blood cells. It is typically expressed as a percentage and is calculated by dividing the standard deviation of RBC volume by the mean RBC volume.
    • A normal RDW value is typically between 11% and 14%. Elevated RDW values may indicate a condition called anisocytosis, in which there is a greater variation in the size of RBCs.
    • This can be seen in various types of anemia such as iron-deficiency anemia, folate deficiency anemia, and vitamin B12 deficiency anemia.
